No More Mysterious Tiny URLs

Spot Cool Stuff is a big fan of Twitter. We are not fans of those various URL shortening services that transform long but logical URLs (eg. http://web.spotcoolstuff.com/category/seo-website-building) into shorter ones that look like they were written in Hungarian (eg. http://u.mavrev.com/przy). We’ve noticed with some alarm that shortened URLs are starting to appear in the comments sections of blogs too. Who knows what sort of site you are going to when you click on one of those?!
Fortunately, there’s Long URL Please. This great new Firefox plugin converts those tiny gobbledygooked URLs into shortened versions of “real” ones. You won’t see the entire URL (and you wouldn’t want to—on Twitter that would blow through the 140 character limit) but you will see something like http://web.spotcoolstuff.com/c~. And that’s enough to gleam a basic sense of where the link goes to and if the site is reputable.

A good idea, but since the people following you on Twitter know your taste, they’d trust what you share: that’s why they are following, right?
Still, because it is an imperfect world and our friends may have odd tastes, so I will sign up.
